  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

This is a great post, Claire!

I love drinking wine while cooking! (And believe me, I am NO cook!) But, I do love the fantasy of it. I especially love the open bottle on the counter top, sipping from the pretty long-stemmed glass while I'm sauteing. (Yes, sauteing is totally part of the fantasy!)

I really, really want to see your new place! We can drink wine and sautee (and Tweet!) together, if you'd like. We'll have to set something up!
